What is NIL

NIL (“Name, Image, and Likeness”) refers to a student-athlete’s “right of publicity” and their ability to profit from marketing and promotional activities.

That right is determined at the state level, leading to a patchwork of laws amongst states. In January 2022, the NJSIAA permitted New Jersey high school athletes the right to partake in NIL without jeopardizing their eligibility, making the Garden State one of the first states to allow NIL at both the college and high school levels.

When implemented with the right intentions, NIL provides student-athletes with a platform to establish a life-balance outside of sports. For young student-athletes, fully capitalizing off their NIL isn't just about the money. It's also about learning how to use their NIL to discover who they are, promote themselves and their stories, and build personal relationships that can propel them for success in life.
One of the biggest misconceptions about NIL is that only the top players in the biggest sports at the biggest schools can benefit. Any high school or college athlete who puts in the time, can resonate with others, and demonstrates value to a brand can land NIL opportunities.
